READIN started out as a place for me
to keep track of what I am reading, and to learn (slowly, slowly)
how to design a web site.
There has been some mission drift
here and there, but in general that's still what it is. Some of
the main things I write about here are
reading books,
listening to (and playing) music, and
watching the movies. Also I write about the
work I do with my hands and with my head; and of course about bringing up Sylvia.
The site is a bit of a work in progress. New features will come on-line now and then; and you will occasionally get error messages in place of the blog, for the forseeable future. Cut me some slack, I'm just doing it for fun! And if you see an error message you think I should know about, please drop me a line. READIN source code is PHP and CSS, and available on request, in case you want to see how it works.

Eddie Fitzgerald has a funny site. I'm never quite sure what to make of Uncle Eddie's Theory Corner, beyond that Eddie has a wonderful eye for faces, for photos and drawings of faces. Today's post is no exception to the rule -- a bunch of great images tied together with a thread that I don't quite get.
Yeah, so, just two pictures that I thought go nicely together. One is the work of Scott Beseler from the streets of Covington, Kentucky; the other is one of Stanley's C-ville finds.

In 2004 the Cassini spacecraft entered orbit around Saturn; ever since it has been sending back majestic images of the planet and her moons and her rings. Now the Cassini Imaging Team has digitized thousand of those images and compiled them into a movie of Cassini's flight -- click the image above to watch. Thanks for the link, Gary.
At South Orange Patch, Marcia Worth reports that Mario Sepulveda will be speaking at Seton Hall next week. Sepulveda is one of the copper miners who were trapped underground at Copiapó last year.
When I got to Hoboken this evening, the sun was low in the sky, and when my train pulled out of the station it was just touching the horizon. By the time I got off the train in South Orange a half an hour later, it was nearly dark. In between I was treated to one of the loveliest sunsets I can remember seeing around here.

Crabfu Artworks presents a walking machine powered by Princess, a pet Roborovski Dwarf Hamster -- huge fun and quite confusing for the Crabfu cat... The machine is a miniature version of Theo Jansen's Strandbeest PVC pipe creations which wander the beaches of Holland. Here is a 3sat Kulturzeit program on Jansen and his creatures:

All the adjectives that come to mind when I seek to describe the photography of Geert Goiris are gerunds of transitive verbs -- "Stunning"; "spell-binding"; "transfixing"... Make of that what you will as I am not sure what to make of it. Goiris describes her style as "traumatic realism".
Ander Monson fears "for the essay, friends, and its bad reputation. It feels white and dull, dusty, old." He explores some different approaches to the essay -- as a game, as a hack, as an interruption. (via Hermano Cerdo)
